Why would a software engineering company want to become “a TAO”?

Transport for NSW’s Technically Assured Organisation Scheme is a program that recognises consultancies and contractors who meet specific engineering and asset management standards. The TAO scheme is designed to ensure that organisations involved in the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of transportation infrastructure meet and delivers against the standards set by TfNSW.

What is the assessment based on?

Under the TAO scheme, participating organisations are assessed and accredited based on their technical capabilities, expertise, and adherence to TfNSW’s standards and guidelines. Companies that achieve TAO status have been assessed and proven to have the necessary Assurance systems and processes in place to deliver high-quality engineering services for TfNSW projects. TAO-accredited organisations are authorised to provide “self-assured” services, meaning they can deliver engineering and asset services on TfNSW assets without needing extensive TfNSW oversight.

How do you become TAO Accredited?

Achieving TAO accreditation can be challenging. The rigorous assessment process involves a multi-step evaluation, including self-assessment, document reviews, and potentially even site visits, to ensure the applicant’s systems and experience meet TfNSW’s strict criteria. The evidence-based focus is on providing concrete evidence of past performance and established processes for engineering and asset management. TfNSW outlines specific requirements for different service areas within engineering and asset management. An organisation needs to demonstrate competence in their desired area of expertise.

What does this mean to Parasyn?

Though Parasyn business systems are accredited for ISO9001-QMS, ISO14001-EMS, and ISO45001-OHS, TAO accreditation is more indicative of the services Parasyn provides to its customers. It’s a reflection of its commitment to sound systems engineering management practices essential for critical infrastructure projects and asset lifecycle management.

Why is there a lack of software systems integrators TAO accredited?

Looking through TAO’s registry, one can gauge the scale and dedication of consulting or engineering practices. It’s uncommon to find dedicated engineering practices among automation and control systems companies. There are several reasons for this, but the industry needs to prioritise quality, as demonstrated by TfNSW, and service providers must recognise quality as an integral part of their business.

“We have not found any other assessment or recognition scheme that tells a story quite like TfNSW’s TAO scheme. Winning a project award does not tell this story. In essence, could we rely on or partner with another TAO organisation? Yes, we could. Certainty is its primary purpose.”

Tony Poole CEO of Parasyn

By engaging with TAO-accredited organisations, TfNSW aims to streamline project delivery processes, mitigate risks, and enhance the overall performance of the transportation network in the region. This scheme helps TfNSW ensure that their assets are safe, reliable, and well-maintained.
