Choosing the right technology to “change the world with better systems” is not a lightweight decision. With all the hype of IIoT, IoT, IoET how can someone like you tell what’s smoke and mirrors? Well written case studies and glowing reports of systems that have only been implemented for 5 minutes are hard to buy into. Sometimes it’s the credibility of “who” in the zoo that says, “you have to take a look at this”, that makes the difference. We have all probably seen software applications taken up like wildfire, not because it’s any better technically but for other reasons like “it’s the flavour of the month”, the marketing information promotes an outstanding ROI, the current system (implementation is broken) etc. Usually it’s the recommendation of a sister organisation or a creditable partner that provides referral authority. Why is this a game changer?
Before IIoT was coined, a less recent theme of Consultants, the authors of whitepapers and speakers at conferences was all about the merging OT and IT. This wasn’t fundamentally new either for practitioners because manufacturers who had embraced MES and were serious about enterprise integration of operational data were already doing it. This space wasn’t solely owned by Manufacturers either and some power companies braved the elements long enough to fully implement DMS. The principles of operational integration are truly sound. The costs have been prohibitive due to the business process re-engineering, re-defining core automation engineering and also the management costs. Technology is now allowing age old sound principles to finally hit the road running. The time for operations and the business to merge has arrived and this time with the promise of predictive analytics, artificial intelligence and significantly reduced engineering, maintenance and operational costs.
The core concept is this. With new technology, we can now deploy applications that span from the device in the field to the finance system. This single information model traverses the entire enterprise. It doesn’t have to go via 3 engineering disciplines to be congruent. With this bold new approach to manage an organisation’s assets, some new thinking may be required to manage the information assets differently, to maximise operational performance. Maybe we do not need to manage alarms and events the way we have done so in the past. Maybe with richer information sets and better context about the assets, we don’t have to have systems controllers and all their support staff to make empirical decisions sometimes delicately defended by PR. Some may say this is more like a revolution than a new challenge. To be more savvy, we settle for this being disruptive.

It is time to move on, time to grow up. Time for a new school and to learn some new skills for this new world of operational excellence and complete business automation.
