The Palm Island Water Treatment Plant currently provides clean drinking water for the entire Palm Island community. The plant receives water from two dam supplies prone to algae blooms and elevated turbidity during wet weather events. It currently produces potable water compliant with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines however lacks capacity to meet peak seasonal demand.
Numerous issues have been identified with mechanical, structural and hydraulic components of the plant, reducing its effectiveness and capacity which present a risk to continuing to achieve compliance with the ADWG. Recent investigations have found that the existing DAF system is limited in capacity and generally unable to handle periods of high flow and has numerous mechanical and structural failures which lessen its effectiveness.
The primary goal is to meet an instantaneous demand of 30L/S. The objective of the Aeramix/Parasyn project is to upgrade the treatment process to enable the system to perform within the ADWG 2011 standard and meet the required water demand.
The upgrade will include:
- Replacement of existing DAF with increased peak demand.
- Upgrade of existing pressure filtration system to meet the flow demand.
- Installation of a gas chlorination system.
- Associated pipework, electrical and control systems.
As the plant is operational, the augmentation of the plant will require the existing system to remain functional until commissioning of the new system commences.
